Extraordinary labels designed by the students of AFA

Supported by Robos, the Wichmann class could realize a special project in their first two semesters, the results of which – individual and extraordinary labels in digital printing – were presented in an exposition last year.

During the last years Robos frequently realized labels and projects with artists like e.g. calligraphist Sigrid Artmann, and in 2019 the series of different label sheets should be designed together with students. The cooperation started in the beginning of April 2019 with an idea of Lasse Langer, a former student employee in marketing department at Robos and now a freelancer and a student of the Academy.

Little presets - maximum freedom

A label format has been agreed upon with students and the artists could begin with their own labels, designed according to their imagination. According to the slogan “What I have to stick to the world”, an A5-sized sheet with 9 labels of different size has been designed. 14 individual drafts of different impressions have been created. Finally, the labels have been printed digitally with the HP Indigo and coated with matte laminate subsequently.

A win-win situation

With great anticipation students have been awaiting their own label sheets which were bundled to small collections and issued to interested visitors on the exhibition weekend. This action gave the students a chance to deal with the topic of label design, when information and design can be displayed only on a limited space but at the same time have to catch the attention of the viewer.

Breaking new grounds

With this cooperation Robos had the possibility to introduce themselves to an audience interested in arts and to awake the interest for labeling. To thank for the engagement of Robos, additionally four unique collages from the printed labels have been created and presented by the students to Simon Reuter, the managing director of Robos. The art pieces can be now viewed in the premises of Robos. In hindsight, this project was a great success for both sides and might lead to a further cooperation in future.
